Review 2025.03.007

Reviewers Note: It is the beginning of 2025 and one of the skills I desire to grow in is that of writing book reviews (having never done this before). I am doing this so I can better hone my writing (and reading) skills as I seek to think more critically about the books I am reading. I am sharing on Goodreads for my own personal development. I know this will be something I am always growing in so if you actually read these, please be patient with me as I develop this skill. I will also receive constructive criticism if you desire to help me become a better writer (and reader). I plan to use this disclaimer for the entire 2025 year.

The Ladder of Divine Ascent by John Climacus

162 Pages

I do not know where I got the idea that this was a prayer book but that is what I thought.  Now it did contain discourse on prayer but it was not the main point.  St. John Climacus died in 649AD so this was written in c. 600 AD.  The book is brutally honest about life and the fights Christians have to face with their own sin. I was surprised by how honest the book is. Generally, I do not feel like that same honesty exists in the more recent books I read.  Of course there are many books so I am most likely not reading the correct ones.

The Kindle says I have 26 highlights which is a lot for such a small book. One of those was, “It is not possible for you to escape embarrassment except through embarrassment.” which reminded me of “fond” memories of embarrassing myself purposefully to change my behavior.  Not exactly what Climacus was talking about but I love connecting with words this way.

Another highlight was, “It is not possible for those who have not spent time in obedience to be humble.”  Father has been teaching me humility through obedience so this quote was and still is meaningful.  The book was full of good material like this.  My 26 highlights were really just highlights (that’s what that means right?).

I did finish this last month so my recollection of it is not as clear as if I had written this sooner but overall I remember liking the book because of the honesty.  Also the book was not difficult to read.  I expected it to be difficult because of the age but it was a good translation (at least for me).  The book feels niche but I do recommend it especially for people who are studying historical Christianity.
