Do others look at you and want to make God the object of their boasting?
“You must be truthful, honest and upright when you take an oath saying, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’ If you do, the nations will pray to be as blessed by him as you are and will make him the object of their boasting.” –Jeremiah 4:2
Last week I was fighting my own sin and started reading Jeremiah. The day I read Jeremiah 4, I only read the first four verses. It was all I needed to be convicted and realize I needed to get rid of things hindering my commitment to God (verse 4). The next day I read the full chapter but still the first four verses drew me in. The third day I did not even try to get beyond those four verses and asked myself if others look at me and want to make God the object of their boasting. I ask the same of you now. Can you answer truthfully? If we answer yes they do, then we must ask why our neighborhoods have not changed. If we answer no they do not, then we must question our very salvation.
This seems like a harsh step to take but what alternative do we have to this question?
Lord, help me to make You the object of my boasting. Everything I have comes from You. If I was disciplined enough these verses would be good to read regularly but it never seems to work out.
