Thursday Kristen told me she had to write a paper about violence for school. Always up for a conversation with my daughter I began talking about this boy we know and his anger. How he behaves and lashes out against his teacher and others violently because his father is absent. Then we talked about another boy with different violent tendencies but the same underlying problem – no active father. Then we talked about a lady who destroys men with sex because she didn’t feel loved by her father. Another lady who destroys herself with drugs most likely because of her father. This isn’t the typical violence we think about but it is violence nonetheless. I remember telling Kristen that the answer to violence was love. Love, whether through words or deeds, changes us.
With all the problems with fathers in the world, it is difficult to point people to the love of the heavenly Father. But what else do we have to offer?
