We had a guest at lunch yesterday at my office and as is the tradition at lunch we had a deep theological discussion with our guest.
John 3:6 – What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
First we discussed what is born of flesh. We talked about how we do not choose where we are born, who are parents are, our gender, or anything else. So are these things random or did God design us with a plan? If they are random then is God in control? If God designed us with a plan then what is that plan? If we do not have any control over our physical birth then do we have control over our spiritual birth? Quite a stimulating conversation to be sure. Thinking about things of God is always fun. (You might want to pray for my office manager Ericka – she has to deal with me asking questions like this several times a week – the horror!)
John 3:27 – John replied, “No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.”
After reading this verse we ask what does John mean by “anything”. Is that an all inclusive word? Does the Word of God really mean anything? Is there some translation of the Greek word where “anything” excludes a list of things we will define later? Is there a footnote with this list of exclusions?
I loved the mental engagement about Jesus at lunch time so stop by for lunch one day and enjoy some of it yourself. There really is no telling what we will get into.
