It Is Simple – Obedience

One recent weekend (as I know time anyway), I had a meeting with a young man.  He was struggling and needed prayer.  He felt he was getting mixed signals from his wife regarding his authority towards his step-children.

I asked many questions but one of them was about his personal relationship with God.  Are you reading God’s Word and praying?  Every time I probed he would ignore the question completely.  After many attempts, he was telling me how easy it was to be a Christian – he said “it is about obedience”.  I asked him what we are supposed to be obedient to.  He said – His Word.  And I asked – How do we know what His Word says?

By reading it…

I know that repetition is sometimes annoying but it is sometimes necessary.  It is necessary to remind people to pray and read God’s Word.  It is necessary to preach the gospel to myself each morning and when I fail to preach the gospel, in my failure, to give myself grace.  We are forgetful and need  to work together to stay on track.  When we see a brother or sister wondering away, we should not sit idly by but run after them.

And let us take thought of how to spur one another on to love and good works, not abandoning our own meetings, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and even more so because you see the day drawing near.
