Irreducible Complexity

I guess I really need to read more science books.

evolution

noun
1.
the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth.
synonyms: Darwinism, natural selection

2.
the gradual development of something, especially from a simple to a more complex form.

I know we have examples of natural selection but that just does not seem the same to me as evolution.  Evolution seems to be a simple organism becoming a complex organism over a long period of time while natural selection seems to be organisms surviving because of a specific attribute they already have and is better suited to the environment they are in.  Am I splitting hairs?
