In Hosea 1:4, we see the LORD has Hosea name his son Jezreel. Reading a commentary by John Calvin on the book of Hosea has given me insight and also questions. I found it interesting that Jehu was given authority from God to destroy the house of Ahab (2 Kings 9) because of sin then Jehu himself did not keep the law of the Lord (2 Kings 10:31) either.
Then we move into destroying the military power of Israel.
Hosea 1:5 – At that time, I will destroy the military power of Israel in the valley of Jezreel.
The commentary talks about how Israel thought they were powerful on their own. They had money, power, and a strong military. Sounds a lot like self-reliance which is a problem we all suffer from. The “I don’t need God” attitude is difficult to shake in all areas of your life. I know when I begin to trust Him more in one area of my life then I soon begin to see how I fail to trust Him in another. But this is the life of the elect – we find our weakness and allow God to bring us to victory. When we are weak, then we are strong.
There have been a lot of good topics for discussion in just the first few verses.
