One morning before school Kristen asked “Why do we have dress codes anyway?” Well because some people are under the impression that changing what we look like on the outside will change the evilness on the inside. Of course this leads into Bible verses and an entire lecture series on sin and our depravity. Yes, I’m “that” parent.
Jesus said it best in Matthew 23:25 – “Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.” You see we were born into sin (Psalm 51:5) and even your own Papa is sinful (Romans 3:23). Nothing in me is good (Romans 3:9-18) outside of Christ. And because we are totally depraved we need someone to redeem us, a Savior, the Messiah, Jesus. We need Jesus to change us on the inside, not clothes to cover up the dirt on the outside.
I really did not expect that to be my answer and I probably talked about it longer than I should have but my kids are used to it by now.
